Greetings All.

As the school year winds down, will you please advise teachers that they should NOT set up their gradebooks in the 2012-13 school year yet?  The assignments are aligned with courses and sections and the master schedules are not finalized until August.  The current year's schedule has rolled forward, but that doesn't mean it will stay the same.  Assignments linked to future sections can prevent the Scheduling Wizard from running.

In June there will be an upgrade to the Gradebook (but nothing as radical as last year!).  I've attached a document highlighting the changes.  Of particular note is the ability to send attachments/assignments to students through the portal, as well as students' ability to return the assignments to you.  At no time will the students have your email address and the portal exchange is linked to the course/section.

Java is also being eliminated from the gradebook, enabling Apple users to access it.  Campus is looking for people to beta test this and other features during late summer/early fall.  It would run concurrently with the active gradebook, so nothing would be lost.  If you're interested in participating, let me know.

Have a wonderful summer!

Mon, 12 Dec 2011 10:17:49 -0800 Semester Grades http://ichelp.posterous.com/semester-grades http://ichelp.posterous.com/semester-grades
Greetings.

Many students will be transferring among our schools between semesters.  In order for the students to be enrolled and scheduled at the new school prior to winter break, it will be necessary to withdraw them at the end of the day on Wednesday, December 21st.

If Teachers have their gradebooks set up to hide dropped students, the students, who should receive a final grade, will not appear.  Please advise your teachers to uncheck this preference as necessary on the 22nd to enter the grade.  Once the grades have been posted, they can re-enter the preference.

Thank you.

Hello WR teachers,

The latest version upgrade has been installed in Infinite Campus. Among many features are the new Enhanced Teacher Tools. Please review the attached documentation to get a jump on the new application. Gradebooks in last year, as well as this year, have been converted and may be copied to the 11-12 year.

There is no more Lesson Planner and you can not enter assignments directly into the gradebook

Please review the attachments- assignments will now be entered in through "Assignments" (under instruction)

Enjoy and good luck,
Rich

Fullscreen_capture_222011_1085

By using http://www.speedtest.net, I tested our network speed at Rio
Norte Junior High School this afternoon. The download speed I picked
up was 0.68 Mb/s.

Try speedtest.net at home and see what result you get. On a SLOW day
at my house (using Time Warner Cable), my download speed is about 15
Mb/s (I can typically get 17-21 Mb/s). If the school speed is 0.68
Mb/s, and home speed is 15 Mb/s, then that means the connection our
students get here at school is 95% slower than what they get at home.

Looks like we need to work together as a community to improve our
schools' network speeds.

Mon, 31 Jan 2011 21:14:30 -0800 Technology in the Classroom - Google Docs - Wed, 2/23 http://ichelp.posterous.com/technology-in-the-classroom-google-docs-wed-2 http://ichelp.posterous.com/technology-in-the-classroom-google-docs-wed-2 Google Docs is cool on so many levels! By saving your documents to "the cloud," you never have to e-mail files back and forth to yourself. You can access your files anywhere you have an internet connection--at school, at home, at Starbucks, even on your iPad, iPod Touch, or smartphone.

It gets better! You can easily share documents and publish them online. The electives department is using it to give all of next year's seventh and eighth graders a chance to have a say in their elective, without the hassle of having to hand-enter every student's preferences into an Excel spreadsheet (it populates the spreadsheet automatically). As a school, we're already using it for Character Counts, tardies, and Student of the Month nominations. Science Olympiad, Drama/Dance, and Yearbook are using online Forms instead of paper applications for students signing up for next year's programs.

But wait...it gets BETTER! Teach your students how to use Google Docs (or let them teach you), and allow them to submit assignments using Google Docs. No more "my printer ran out of ink" or "I e-mailed it to you...didn't you get it?" No more crates full of papers to bring home. Students can start work at school, continue at home, collaborate with their teammates, and present back at school...all without a flash drive! Teachers can make comments using "sticky notes" in the margins and monitor progress. Team Thunder students are already using Google Docs as we move closer to a "paperless classroom." History students are completing their Medieval Levels Projects with Google Docs; science students are doing lab write-ups and projects on Google Docs.

February's "Technology in the Classroom" workshop will be completely devoted to Google Docs. It's on Wednesday, February 23, 2:15 to 3:30 p.m. in Room D-6. Curious? Check out the online tour here:
http://www.google.com/google-d-s/tour1.html

It includes a tip for SAVING PAPER, too, by turning off "Show Assignment Description."

It's here:

Also, if you're like me, at some point in your time here at Rio you have misplaced your check-out form. That then involves the walk-of-shame or the email-of-shame to Nancy as you sheepishly ask for another one (been there, done that). I scanned it for you (OK, and a little for me, too), just in case you need another copy. Who knows, before Friday I may need another copy:

Assign_a_grading_scale_to_your

I've gotten a couple e-mails saying teachers are entering Q2 grades, but not seeing any scores come up in the yellow section. Easy fix, and we actually did this all at the beginning of Q1 and then forgot (I admit that I forgot about it too).

You need to assign a GRADING SCALE to your Term Q2 Term Grade (see attached image). Basically, your spreadsheet needs to know how to calculate what is an A, a B, and so on, but until you assign a Grading Scale to the "Term Q2 Term Grade" for each class period, it will leave the yellow section of your Gradebook blank.

I also have a little how-to video on the blog from August 30, when this issue came up the first time. Check it out here:

Mon, 18 Oct 2010 15:42:39 -0700 Viewing grades for students who have withdrawn from a class http://ichelp.posterous.com/viewing-grades-for-students-who-have-withdraw http://ichelp.posterous.com/viewing-grades-for-students-who-have-withdraw If you have a student who has withdrawn from your class, you CAN still see their grades, even if they are no longer in any of your classes. Infinite Campus doesn't make this easy, but it can be done.

1. Go to Admin>Preferences>Hide Dropped Students. UN-check the Hide Dropped Students box.
2. Here's where it gets tricky. If you save your preferences, you have only saved it in one class. To save it in ALL classes, choose Mass Assign to all classes" (in blue at the bottom), Toggle all the boxes so they're all checked, and then hit Save.

You should now be able to go back into your Gradebook and view the grades for all dropped/transferred students in every class, regardless of whether they transferred to a different class of yours, another Rio Norte teacher, or another school.

You would think there would just be a simple toggle switch right there in the Gradebook: "View Dropped Students" and "Hide Dropped Students." Again, that would be easy, right? Hopefully Infinite Campus will include this in next year's update. I'll keep my fingers crossed.

Thu, 14 Oct 2010 15:11:51 -0700 Posting grades (BIG thing!) and your teacher website (also important, but not as critical) http://ichelp.posterous.com/posting-grades-big-thing-and-your-teacher-web http://ichelp.posterous.com/posting-grades-big-thing-and-your-teacher-web Two important pieces of info with regard to Infinite Campus:

1. When your grades for Q1 are complete, and you are ready to begin posting to the "Q1 - Term Grade," you right-mouse click in the green portion of your Gradebook (see attached example). You may be tempted to do exactly what we did at the progress report and select the progress grade. Resist this urge! If you do, you will overwrite your progress report grades. Instead, simply choose Post Grades (again, see picture example).
---THE ONE EXCEPTION TO THIS IS, of course, is if you teach algebra, geometry, or Spanish (a high-school level, semester course). In this case, you WOULD go to the drop-down menu so you can select Q1 Term Grade.

2. This one comes as a heads-up from Brian Kunkel: if you are putting your website into Infinite Campus, you must make sure to put the "http://" before your website. Just putting "mrippolito.com" or "www.mrippolito.com" will not make it a hyperlink in Infinite Campus in the parent/student portal. In order to make it an active hyperlink, you must use the correct protocol: "http://www.mrippolito.com" I have also attached an example of what this looks like in Admin>Preferences.

Any questions, give me a holler.

Cheers,
Ron

Sat, 18 Sep 2010 10:59:00 -0700 Who are you? - IC Messenger http://ichelp.posterous.com/who-are-you-ic-messenger http://ichelp.posterous.com/who-are-you-ic-messenger Dear teachers,

I received a very polite e-mail from the dad of a yearbook student a couple days ago telling me that it's sometimes confusing to know which teacher is sending a message using Infinite Campus, and wondering if we could do something about it.

Unlike previous "snappy" software we have used in the past, IC does not include our teacher name or e-mail address anywhere in the message. The reply e-mail address is simply "DoNotReply@hartdistrict.org." That's not very helpful. Parents can often tell who we are from the context of the message, but not always.

I am CERTAIN that this will be addressed in next year's upgrade, but in the meantime, you may want to include your name somewhere in the e-mail. For my part, I'm going to start putting my name at the end of every subject line, for example:

INBs to be graded in our next class - Mr Ippolito

It's an easy way to provide a little extra customer service for our parents and students. :-)

Fri, 10 Sep 2010 16:20:45 -0700 Meeting Change http://ichelp.posterous.com/meeting-change http://ichelp.posterous.com/meeting-change I got your "additional information" right here :-)

On Tuesday afternoon, Marvelous Mindy Moore and Infinite Ippolito will dazzle and amaze you with our presentation on Posting Progress Report Grades. We will then do a brief "Frequently Asked Questions" session where we answer your questions about all things Infinite Campus.

At 2:00 p.m., Mindy and I move our show to the Boom-Boom Lounge (A-1), where you can sit down at a computer, export all your grades and ask questions. This part is totally optional, but hey, why not sit down and get 'em done!?

For those who are wondering, student service students will still be graded on a Pass/Fail basis (we'll show you how). We'll also show you how to manually input your grades if you are using a gradebook other than IC.

The grade window closes on Monday, September 20, at 3:00 p.m. We had some people freaking out (OK, me included) thinking that it was going to close on Thursday, September 16. That's just when the "grading period" ends. Edie has assured me that we have the weekend to do our final tinkering as we have always had.

There will be an adjustment to our meetings scheduled for next week. Tuesday, September 14 is an E day where we are scheduled to continue to write and plan 1st quarter common assessments and follow-up activities. We will do this on Wednesday at 2:30 during our staff meeting. On Tuesday, we will work with Infinite Campus/grading procedures starting at 1:10. You will receive additional information next week.
